Basic Research Paintings, 1989-1991

Curated by Gregor Muir. The show about Isa Genzken (Germany, 1948) presents, for the first time in Italy, a series from the late 1980s, a corpus of painting works that is less known than the sculptures and installations, for which Genzken is famous. They are monochrome oil paintings whose very name, Basic Research, suggests the start of an exploration and interaction with the environment. The frottages the artist made of her studio floor are half-way between painting and sculpture, and seek to establish nonverbal communication with the surrounding space and the public.

Think Twice | Viral Research

Curated by Francesco Bonami, Achim Borchardt-Hume The Whitechapel Gallery presents Viral Research, the second in a series of displays from the Collection Sandretto Re Rebaudengo. Viral Research takes its title from the central work by US sculptor Charles Ray. With an absence of colour, this display of monochrome works creates a sense of suspense and the uncanny, reminiscent of film noir. Shown for the first time in the UK, Ray’s Viral Research (1986) is a group of various shaped glass bottles arranged on a transparent table and interconnected by a system of pipes. As if in a chemist’s laboratory, the bottles each...

Maison Particulière art center Through the eyes of three Italian art collectors   OCTOBER 16 - DECEMBER 21, 2014 Love life, appreciate it in all that it brings us of miraculous, unexpected, of good and beautiful, of enthusiasm and discovery, big or small enjoyment, to know how to taste, recognize, feel, perceive. A work of art calls on to the senses, to the sensual delight and to the enjoyment. Such is the theme of our 12th art exhibit at Maison Particulière. They invited three Italian, enthusiastic and generous collectors, who with a great spontaneity "played" the game for us: choose at the same time works...

Just Do It

Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo presents a personal show of David Ostrowski (Cologne, 1981), one of the most interesting artists from the last generation of abstract painters, who are emerging on the international art scene. After studying at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf under Albert Oehlen, one of the most influential and controversial contemporary painters, Ostrowski grabbed international attention and, in the past two years, his works have been exhibited in Berlin, Paris, Zürich, New York, and Los Angeles. David Ostrowski has chosen painting both as a medium, and as the object of his research. His practice is based on a constant trial-and-error process,...

Beware Wet Paint

Curated by Gregor Muir Beware Wet Paint (29 October – 1 February 2015) is a group show that explores the latest trends in international painting. The exhibition is produced in collaboration with the Institute of Contemporary Arts – ICA London. Beware Wet Paint consists of works by artists for whom painting forms a single strand within a multidisciplinary practice. The exhibition title comes from Richard Hamilton's account of Marcel Duchamp repeating the words slowly with blood-curdling emphasis placed on the word 'beware', underlining the disruptive nature of this supposedly traditional form. The exhibition also alludes to the role of the conceptual artist...

GE/14 Altro dalle Immagini

Curated by Filippo Maggia Since then, 41 artists have been involved, over the years, in this exploration, and some of them have taken part in more than one edition of the project, which has developed in cycles of roughly three years. The first edition, in 1999, was organized in the evocative space of former Chiesa del Carmine in Taormina, the following year at Modena’s Galleria Civica, and finally in Milan, at Galleria del Credito Valtellinese, in 2001. A renewed edition of the first exhibition was presented in February 2002 at the former Italian Pavilion in the Venice Biennale complex. In 2003, a new...

Europium

Europium is the title of the show, and of the installation, which the artist has designed and produced for the exhibition space of the Foundation. Europium is the most reactive of the so-called rare earth elements –it oxidizes quickly and, when exposed to air, explodes spontaneously at temperatures between 150 °C and 180 °C. The works of Thomas Teurlai are immersive installations, in which spectators are invited to interact with a new world, a place that conveys both restlessness and amazement. His sculptures have the shape of a mysterious technological apparatus, made of various tools and equipment, machines and engines...

Christian Rosa, (b. Rio de Janeiro, 1982) is one of the most interesting young abstract painters to have emerged on the international contemporary scene. This exhibition at Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Turin, is his first institutional solo show. In his works, Rosa uses different techniques: oil painting, spray, pencil and collage - a combination of mixed techniques that evoke the styles of calligraphy, engraving and graffiti art, with signs layered on virtually monochrome backgrounds, grey or white. He has a very strong relationship with painting and works directly on the raw, unprepared canvas, condensing his sessions into tight physical gestures. His...

Pictures Punish Words

The technically and iconographically striking paintings of Avery Singer (born in 1987, lives and works in New York) thwart our visual expectations. At an initial glance, they resist a clear classification of painting or printing processes. Hence her works raise the obvious and artistically pressing question of how the digital information that surrounds us can materialize itself – be it as a flat image on paper or more recently in 3-D in plastic, or on and in every other possible material surface. Avery Singer has created a cycle of works specifically for this first institutional solo exhibition. In cooperation with Kunsthalle...

Press Play. L’arte e i mezzi d’informazione

Curated by Irene Calderoni   Press Play presents the artist’s point of view when exploring the language ofthe media, a world saturated with virtual images in which reality seeminglycoincides with its mass-mediatic representation. The chance to accessinformation live 24/7 emphasises the dimensions of immediacy, speed andflow, a consequence of reality that makes the perception and interpretationof events more complex. Our knowledge of the facts passes through thepowerful filters of the mass media, where newsworthy stories are selected anddetermined internally, and packaged like consumer products to be marketedand sold to the widest possible public. Therefore, information becomes a form of entertainment, a performancedominated by...

RAGNAR KJARTANSSON

Kjartansson’s work is based on a unique blend of visual art, music and theatre. Drawing on inspirations and influences ranging from traditional Icelandic legends to opera music to contemporary pop culture, his performances tend to be built around the endless repetition of a single formula, whether it is a gesture, a word, an aria or a pictorial image. This device leads to pieces in which duration and resistance play a fundamental role, which is in keeping with the classic tradition of performance and body art, but there is also an allusion to the exhausting practice of rehearsals, which Kjartansson is...

Dreams of reason. Highlights from the Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Collection

Curated by Dobrila Denegri In collaboration with Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo With patronage of Italian Embassy in Warsaw How can a collection of contemporary art become a subject for a thematic exhibition? How can it be interpreted or perceived by an external gaze? How can it become a paradigm? Each collection contains an infinite variety of inner narratives and, for the collector, it can be challenging to discover some of them and share them with a different audience. For this reason some of the highly-renowned collections have been shown in the Centre of Contemporary Art in Torun over past five years. In each...

The double solo show highlights the different approaches, through which the artists interpret sculpture and installation, and analyzes the multiple implications of these approaches on the physical, sensorial and mental space. Through a selection of both recent works and new productions, the exhibition documents these different paths, makes them converge and contrasts their different attitudes and interests - body and immateriality, silence and sound, opacity and brilliance. The common denominator is the cast, print, or recording, which the artists...

Sunt lacrimae rerum [They are the tears of things] presents a series of works from Collezione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo. The show focuses on contemporary sculpture both as a medium and as a tool to explore the world of objects, and our individual relationship with things. The quote from Virgil’s Aeneis, after which the exhibition is titled, emphasizes the melancholy that often accompanies this relationship – the sense of yearning and loss that comes from associating objects with past memories. At the same time, the expression “the tears of things” may suggest the idea of an emotional life of objects, a...
