Passo dopo Passo

curated by Tenzing Barshee, Molly Everett, Dorota Michalska Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Torino 14 may – 16 october 2016 opening: 14 may, from 6:30 to 9 pm Passo Dopo Passo seeks to examine diverse – both historical and contemporary – artworks and artistic practices that reflect on the status of movement, openness and enclosure, fear and expectations. The exhibition is linked to an Italian perspective – that of a country with an intrinsic relationship to questions of migration. From a historical point of view, the Mediterranean peninsula has been shaped by violent invasions, followed by waves of emigration and immigration, leading to a complex...

I See A Darkness

I See a Darkness is a group show presenting the video and audio works of seven international artists. The cinema experience, in a museum setting, occupies a space whose perception it erases, blacking out its boundaries, specific architectural features, and the usual way in which it relates with things and people. Darkness is the necessary condition for the projected image to appear, and hence for vision, yet this image remains fleeting, insubstantial, and can hardly be captured. In this perspective, the image can be read as a metaphor of a state of mind pervaded by melancholy, yearning, reminiscence – all...

QUARTERS

Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, presents QUARTERS, the first italian solo exhibition of Magali Reus (born 1981 in The Hague, The Netherlands. Based in London, UK). Magali Reus works a whole range of formal influences and art-historical references into her sculptures: she alludes to the domestic as well as the industrial, to the functional and also the decorative. As her formal point of departure, she uses the kind of objects we rely upon daily but which we scarcely notice. All objects in our day-to-day orbit fulfill either a specific role, which the individual object’s design is geared towards, or alternatively, they serve...

Accessibility

The Education Department is involved in regular activities of exhibition visits and workshops with daily centres and cooperatives that welcome users with physical and psychological disabilities of various types, and with specialised centres such as the Fondazione Carlo Molo, which takes care of patients that are affected by aphasia. Among the most interesting programs one was undertaken a few years ago together with the Italian Union for the Blind and Visually Impaired. A group from the Union has become loyal to the Fondazione, and visits our exhibitions and takes part in specific workshops regularly by now. In order to facilitate the...

The man who sat on himself

Curated by Kate Strain, Angelica Sule e Zsuzsanna Stànitz. Since you were a child you’ve been constructing your own reality. You collected fragments of the world, built castles from sand and played out the stories from your imagination. The older you got, the weaker your grip on fantasy became, and the tiny thread that tethered your dreams to your hands became frail and perhaps disappeared. Today you are reminded of the concrete reality of life at every impasse. You see it most clearly in the built environment, in infrastructure, in habitations, and in the chairs in which you sit. The physical world coerces...

Rinascimento

Curated by Irene Calderoni. Just like film stills, the works of Villar Rojas are objects filled with time, devices that narrate time through images, from prehistoric finds to the most futuristic, or post-apocalyptic, landscapes, recording it in the physical substance of matter, in a constant process of evolution and decay. Typically, he produces large installations made from a mixture of raw clay and concrete, which looks fissured, cracked, as if its substance already were in a state of advanced corruption, as if time were turning these objects into ruins in front of our eyes. This frailty is not only apparent, but...

Emissary in the Squat of Gods

Curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist Ian Cheng's work explores the nature of mutation and the capacity of humans to relate to change. In his live simulations, familiar objects are programmed with basic properties, but are left to influence each other without authorial control or end. What results are often unpredictable emergent behaviors that ceaselessly combine and disassemble within a living virtual ecosystem. Algorithmic modeling, game design, and principles of improv inform Cheng’s work and serve as technologies to render sacred human dignities and habits as raw material for mutation. Cheng sees his simulations as a kind of neurological gym in which...

Basic Research Paintings, 1989-1991

Curated by Gregor Muir. The show about Isa Genzken (Germany, 1948) presents, for the first time in Italy, a series from the late 1980s, a corpus of painting works that is less known than the sculptures and installations, for which Genzken is famous. They are monochrome oil paintings whose very name, Basic Research, suggests the start of an exploration and interaction with the environment. The frottages the artist made of her studio floor are half-way between painting and sculpture, and seek to establish nonverbal communication with the surrounding space and the public.
