Campo

Campo

Campo is a course for curators designed and launched by Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in 2012. The program is unique compared to the rest of the Italian offer in training for contemporary art, with a formula that combines a specialized course with a travelling residency. Campo is an itinerary: it starts from the museum, as the operative base for direct training and professional experience, and continues with an on-the-go research project, which includes a full program of study visits to the main Italian art institutions, non-profit spaces, galleries and artist studios.
The inside/outside structure of the course is designed to reflect the peculiar features and working modes of the curatorial profession, which is a dyamic practice based on research and on the knowledge of specific disciplines, combined with social interaction, relationships, and constant communication with artists, curators, critics, gallery owners, directors, and operators, of museum institutions and public or independent art centers.
Studying, acquiring knowledge, traveling, visiting, networking, planning and designing: these are the basic activities behind the work and achievements of a curator, and it is the real experience of curators that the course of Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo takes as the cornerstone of its curriculum and of its unique approach.
Campo is an initiative of Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in collaboration with Fondazione CRT.

Campo – Turin Museum
Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo views the museum not only as the workplace of different professionals and a space for exhibitions and the visiting public, but also as a place for learning and training. During the course, the museum becomes a space for study and work. The continuity between the life of the museum and the training program is one of the distinctive features of Campo. Lectures take place in a special classroom, specially reserved for the course inside the exhibition space itself. Students can thus experience the process of producing an exhibition, following all of its stages and appreciating the contribution of every single professional involved. This will help them understand aspects related to planning, production, communication and education. This section, which addresses the “Methodology of curating”, is complemented by two theoretical modules “Art since the 1960s” and “Theory and history of curatorial practices”, and by the seminar “Writing about art”.

Coordinated by four teachers-tutors, the lessons involve direct contact between the students and the whole professional staff of Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, as part of a learning itinerary complemented by laboratory experiences that will take place in small groups.

During the course, the exhibition openings, lectures and other events that are part of the usual program of the Foundation are taken as opportunities for knowledge and study. This experience is enhanced by the lively cultural life in the city of Turin, which can be regarded as the Italian capital of contemporary art. The museums, foundations, fair, galleries, the artists and curators working in this city create an environment that is conducive to social interaction, meetings and visits.

Campo Italy Trip
The study trip is a fundamental, defining part of the curator course. During the study program, participants get to know directly several institutions in the Italian art system, visiting many cities including Milan, Venice, Bologna, Florence, Rome and Naples. They spend a few days in each city, visiting museum institutions, private collections, galleries, nonprofit spaces and artist studios. Every year, in coincidence with major international events, Campo also proposes a study trip to a European capital. Each visit provides an opportunity to see exhibiting spaces and works of art as well as meeting operators working in the art system, such as museum directors and curators, gallery owners, collectors, art critics and artists. These field trips are essential in order to establish relationships with senior professionals in the sector, and to learn the specific research and working method of a curator.

After Campo
An optional internship, which is planned in the month of June with each student, completes the training offer of the course. It includes 300 hours and takes place at cultural institutions, in which students can be involved in the different stages of planning and production of an exhibiting event.

Each year at the end of the course, Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo and Fondazione CRT award four grants for internships at institutions in Turin.

Opportunities for employment
The course aims at training contemporary art curators at a professional level. Their careers can then develop independently (as freelance curators) or by joining cultural institutions (museums, public institutions, foundations, private collections, nonprofit spaces, galleries, fairs, biennials, festivals, auction houses, magazines and publishing houses).

Target audience
Undergraduate and graduate students from degree programs in art-related subjects such as Cultural Heritage, Art History, Drama, Arts and Music studies, and students from Fine Arts Academies. We also welcome candidates from other fields of the humanities (including Architecture, Anthropology, Philosophy, Political Science, and Sociology) who are interested in acquiring knowledge in the field of contemporary art.

Duration and attendance
