The project Da Guarene all'Etna, 03 continues the work of support and promotion of young Italian photographers started in 1998 by Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo. 15 photographers - Andrea Abati, Luca Andreoni, Antonio Fortugno, Olivo Barbieri, Paolo Bernabini, Antonio Biasiucci, Luca Campigotto, Daniele de Lonti, Vittore Fossati, Francesco Jodice, Tancredi Mangano, Pino Musi, Carmelo Nicosia, Enzo Obiso, Alessandra Spranzi, Natale Zoppis - were asked to interpret the changes that were happening in the Italian architectural and environmental landscape, choosing a theme that could suit their individual expressive peculiarities. After a year of work, the exhibition Da Guarene all'Etna, via mare, via terra was presented in Taormina as part of the Taormina Arte festival, and was later repeated in 2000 in Modena, at the Galleria Civica d'Arte Moderna. In June 2001, after the addition of several new works, the exhibition was presented in Milan, at the Palazzo delle Stelline, and finally at the Italian Pavilion of the Venice Biennale in February 2002. In this last venue, the show was given a new title: Da Guarene all'Etna, 02. The purpose of this was to highlight the dimension of continuity the project had acquired. The Venice exhibition accounted for the most recent developments the artists had achieved in 1998. Da Guarene all'Etna, 03, therefore, was intended as the natural continuation of the previous editions.
Of the ten artists invited today, three had already taken part in two preceding editions: Andreoni and Fortugno, Bernabini, and De Lonti.
This choice aims at stressing the Foundation's role not only in supporting the research of young Italian artists in view of the exhibiting event, but also in playing an active role in the evolution of their art and in the professional development of their work both in Italy and abroad. The new edition will also feature works by Cristiano Berti, Donatella Di Cicco, Gianni Ferrero Merlino, Luigi Gariglio, Francesca Rivetti, Annalisa Sonzogni and Francesco Zucchetti.
The show is opening on May 24, and will be held in Guarene d'Alba, at the Palazzo Re Rebaudengo. It will be open to visitors until July 6, 2003.
On the occasion of the exhibition
Da Guarene all'Etna, 03, Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo decided to launch a prize competition in collaboration with other European museum institutions. In each edition, three museum directors will be invited to take part in the prize jury and vote for the winner.
As part of the opening of the 2003 edition, an international jury, composed of Régis Durand, director of the Centre National de la Photographie in Paris, Sune Nordgren, director of the Baltic in Newcastle, and Christine Frisinghelli, director of Camera Austria, awarded an equal first prize to the works of Donatella Di Cicco and Gianni Ferrero Merlino, who will be both given a solo exhibition at the Baltic.
