Project: the idea of an accessible museum involves that each visitor should be able to take advantage of the cultural content offered by the museum.
The itineraries and activities proposed by the Educational Department of the Foundation are useful steps towards an easier, more active participation in the cultural life of the city. These reflections led us to subscribe to the Manifesto per la Cultura Accessibile, a common declaration in which the main cultural institutions in Turin and its surroundings pledge to work on issues of cultural accessibility.
The Educational Department organizes exhibition visits and workshops in collaboration with Disability day care centers and cooperatives for people with different types of mental disorders. We have also started promising collaborations with specialized centers such as Fondazione Carlo Molo, which takes care of aphasia patients.
One of the most complex itineraries was launched in collaboration with Unione Italiana
Ciechi e Ipovedenti of Turin (Italian Union of the Blind and Visually Impaired), whose members now regularly visit our exhibitions and attend specific workshops. In order to facilitate access and help understand spaces and content, the Foundation designed, in collaboration with Tactile Vision Onlus, a tactile map of the building, and has adopted Biancoenero, a specific font that is easier to read for the visually impaired and dyslexic, for captions. The most important result of our collaboration with UICI is the study project on the relationship between contemporary art and sense perception, which started out with a workshop, was expanded to a one-day seminar, and will continue throughout the year 2014 with theoretical and practical follow-up initiatives. The research program also includes, besides UICI and Tactile Vision Onlus, the Parco d’Arte Vivente (Living Art Park) and Tea Taramino, curator of Arte Plurale, the International Biennial on disability.
