Spazio7 is a project – a restaurant, a café, a “trattoria contemporanea” and an event venue - which combines art with natural, traditional and yet contemporary cuisine.
At Spazio7, the Italian culinary tradition and the typical, regular experimentation of Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, come together in one of the most important centers for contemporary art.
The head of the project is Emilio Re Rebaudengo, a Law graduate at the University of Turin with a Master in Business Administration acquired between Madrid and London.
After completing his studies, Emilio Re Rebaudengo followed his passion and started working in the hotel business for the Accor group, at first in Turin and then in London. This allowed him to experience thoroughly both the restaurant and hotel industries dynamics, and it improved his organizational skills and logistics.
Back in Turin, he decided to capitalize on his expertise and created Spazio7, maintaining the historical name the restaurant was assigned in 2002, during the inauguration of Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo: "Space". Emilio only added an orange 7, the lucky number that has always accompanied him in all of his challenges. Three years after the management of Emilio, Spazio7 receives its first Michelin star.
Designed by Italian artist Rudolf Stingel, a leading exponent of the international contemporary art scene, the bar is the ideal place for a pleasant break at any time of the day. The tables and chairs, also designed by Stingel, are coated with a special silver film, while the surfaces of the walls and ceiling are drilled following a backlit modular motive, giving the environment a warm and lively ambience.
From breakfast to after dinner time, the café offers a complete service for all guests’ needs.
Spazio7 is not only located within a space of contemporary art, but it is a work of art itself. The café and its furniture were designed by the Italian artist Rudolf Stingel, while the restaurant was created by Claudio Silvestrin, the architect that conceived the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo exhibition space. Silvestrin is renowned for having planned the Oblix Restaurant, located inside the skyscraper Shard, designed by Renzo Piano in London. The sober walls, including one in Lecce stone that recalls the façade of the building, and the concrete floor are setting of a minimal decor, bestowing the context a contemporary atmosphere.
The work of Italian artist Amedeo Martegani dominates the room with his Untitled, a three-color wall painting on wallpaper. The work covers two angled walls of the room and is a night view of a hedge, with isolated and bright leaves on a black background. A series of multicolored silicone vases by Alessandro Ciffo complete the rectangular, peculiar main location. The kitchen offers a cuisine with a contemporary twist, representing a journey through the authentic flavors of Italian cuisine, with a particular attention to Piedmont’s culinary tradition. Rigorous in its simplicity, each course enhances the quality of every selected ingredient.
The kitchen brigade is led by Alessandro Mecca. Born in 1984, he started his career at the "Crocetta", his family's restaurant in Torino. There, he learned the basis of cooking and discovered his passion for the Italian traditional cuisine. From his father, he inherited the "obsession" for the research of ingredients, the respect for work and for the relationships with staff and suppliers. His job itinerary includes the restaurant Guido da Costigliole (Santo Stefano Belbo), Al Sorriso di Soriso, La Ciau del Tornavento (Treiso) and the DOM in San Paolo, with Alex Atala.
Working daily in one of the most important contemporary art centers in the world provides a continuous stimulus for the chef. His intention is not to recreate the works of art in a dish, but to be inspired by them: a touch of color, the detail of an installation or a particular moment with an artist met during an exhibition.
